Florida runner found dead in river after hearing 'demon voices' before last run

Tragic End to a Routine Run

In a heartbreaking turn of events, a 21-year-old Florida runner, Airelle Valdes, was found dead in the Caloosahatchee River in North Fort Myers on Monday, days after she was reported missing. Valdes, known for her frequent marathons and long runs, had left home for what would be her final jog.

Family members reported that Valdes had been behaving strangely in the days leading up to her disappearance. On August 28, they informed the police that she had been hearing “demon voices” in her head. This alarming behavior was documented in the police report, raising concerns about her mental state.

Last sightings and search efforts

Valdes’ mother became particularly worried when she noticed her daughter leaving the house without shoes and later found her at a local electrical plant. The police report highlighted that Valdes seemed to be experiencing a mental crisis and believed she was in need of help.

On the day she went missing, Valdes left home wearing a gray hoodie and tan shorts, without carrying her phone or identification. The search for her involved extensive efforts, including the use of drones and a K-9 unit. Her body was eventually discovered between the Edison and Caloosahatchee bridges.

Community response and grief

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office has stated that there is no evidence of foul play in Valdes’ death. Her family, devastated by the loss, expressed their grief and gratitude towards the community in a statement on a GoFundMe fundraiser page.

“Arielle was missing for five agonizing days, during which countless community members came together to search for her, showing incredible strength, love, and solidarity,” her family wrote. “While we hoped and prayed for her safe return, we now face the unimaginable reality of having to say goodbye.”

Fundraising efforts

As of Wednesday afternoon, the fundraising has raised over $9,400 towards the memorial and expenses, close to the goal of $10,000 placed on the fundraiser.

The tragic death of Airelle Valdes serves as a stark reminder of the importance of mental health awareness and community support. Her story has not only brought together a community in mourning but also highlighted the love and solidarity that can arise in times of crisis.
