Colorado cop resigns from 21-year-old job after secret career in adult films is revealed

A veteran law enforcement officer from Arapahoe County, Colorado, has resigned after her secret side career in the adult film industry was revealed, exposing a deeply personal story of financial survival and difficult choices.

Shannon Lofland, 44, a 21-year veteran of the sheriff’s office, opened up about the devastating financial pressures that drove her to make an unconventional decision. “I was drowning financially,” she told CBS News, explaining her brief foray into adult film production.

Lofland’s financial nightmare began with a catastrophic hailstorm in June 2023 that caused $500,000 in damage to her home. Adding to her troubles, her insurance refused to cover the expenses, and skyrocketing interest rates tripled her adjustable-rate mortgage, pushing her toward foreclosure.

A controversial solution

Facing mounting bills, debt collectors, and seemingly insurmountable financial challenges, Lofland made a controversial choice. “I found a legal, lucrative way to support my family and save our home,” she stated, revealing she participated in approximately six adult film scenes to generate income.

Departmental policies and consequences

The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office launched an internal investigation after discovering her secondary employment. Lofland acknowledged that she violated departmental policies by not seeking prior approval for her work in the adult film industry.

“I knew it was against policy and could be considered leading a double life,” Lofland candidly admitted.

Despite her difficult decision, Lofland emphasized the professional nature of her brief stint in the adult film industry. “I faced no coercion or pressure,” she said, noting that her husband supported her choice during their financial crisis.

Resignation and reflection

On Tuesday, Lofland resigned from her long-standing position, expressing deep love for her law enforcement career. “I’ve been dedicated and loyal. I truly loved my job and the lives I’ve been able to impact,” she said.

She also stepped down from her position on Colorado’s Peace Officer Standards and Training Board, marking the end of a distinguished public service career.

An uncertain future

Looking forward, Lofland remains uncertain about her next steps but hasn’t ruled out continuing her work in the adult film industry. “Some may judge and say there are ‘better’ ways to make money, but at that moment, I had no other options,” she concluded.

Lofland’s story highlights the increasingly challenging economic landscape facing many Americans, where traditional career paths and financial stability are being tested by unexpected life challenges.
