Every year, thousands of New Yorkers participate in the city’s affordable housing lottery, hoping for a chance at a new home. The New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) reports that 15,000 households secured affordable units this year through the lottery. But what happens when tenants vacate these units?
According to an HPD spokesperson, interested New Yorkers can indicate their interest in re-rentals via their Housing Connect profile by completing the “housing choices” section. Re-rentals are not publicly advertised on the portal; updating your profile is essential to receive notifications when units become available.
The New York City Housing Development Corporation (HDC) also promotes re-rentals in developments they finance. Currently, there are nine low-income and nine middle-income re-rentals available.
