Ocean Sunfish Stuns Beachgoers with Peculiar Appearance
Beachgoers along the Oregon coast were taken aback when a peculiar marine creature washed up on the shore. The strange fish, identified as a Mola mola or ocean sunfish, has been drawing considerable attention.
In a Facebook post, Seaside Aquarium officials revealed that the sunfish measured just over five feet in length. While this may seem sizable, it’s relatively small for a Mola mola, which can grow up to 10 feet long and weigh as much as 5,000 pounds, making them the heaviest bony fish on Earth.
The ocean’s sunbather
Often nicknamed “the ocean sunfish,” the Mola mola is commonly seen basking on the ocean’s surface, soaking in the sun. However, it’s their bizarre physical characteristics that truly set them apart. With tiny mouths, large eyes, and an unusual shape, they appear almost otherworldly.
The Monterey Bay Aquarium has likened its appearance to something out of a “mad scientist’s” laboratory. According to National Geographic, the fish’s back fin “simply never grows.” Instead, “it folds into itself as the enormous creature matures, creating a rounded rudder called a clavus.”
Mola molas are not alone in their genus. They roam tropical and temperate seas worldwide, primarily hunting jellyfish, which constitute the bulk of their diet. The Mola genus boasts three distinct species: Mola mola, Mola tecta, and Mola alexandrini.
In 2017, a rare Mola tecta, also known as the Hoodwinker Sunfish, was discovered north of Gearhart Beach. This species is physically distinct from the Mola mola, featuring a T-shaped pattern on the clavus and reaching a maximum size of 7.9 feet while weighing around 4,000 pounds. The discovery of the Mola tecta generated considerable excitement among locals, who flocked to the beach for a rare glimpse of the unusual fish.
