Atlanta restaurant imposes 'bad parenting' fee to those with unruly kids

If you have a difficult child who uses floor jostling as a manipulative method to push you into buying toys you would otherwise refuse, you might think twice before visiting this restaurant in the United States. This restaurant, located in Atlanta’s Blue Ridge Mountains region, has put an “adult surcharge” on its menu, which is meant for parents whose children demonstrate disruptive behavior while dining. The Toccoa Riverside Restaurant is the location in question.

A photo of their menu, which was posted on the famous social media network Reddit, sparked outrage owing to the inclusion of this seemingly arbitrary adult surcharge, which is ambiguously designated as “$$$.” This penalty is still not accompanied by any explicit information on how much clients must pay for their children’s transgressions.

‘No respect, no service,’ they say

The menu also includes a footer that reminds diners to respect the restaurant’s workers, property, and demeanor, emphasizing their strong adherence to a “No respect, no service” policy.

In addition, they add a 20% gratuity to the bills of bigger parties of more than six people, those celebrating birthdays, and those who choose to divide their bills. Diners who prefer card payments must also pay an additional 3.5 percent surcharge on top of the menu prices. Surprisingly, the act of sharing food at this institution is also charged a price of $3 (equal to Rs 249).

In the caption box, the Reddit user who uploaded this menu image said, “This restaurant charges you extra for bad parenting.” This generated a flood of reactions from other Redditors, who were quick to point out the menu’s plethora of flaws. While others were surprised, saying, “Ain’t nobody paying that,” others were shocked that a restaurant would charge patrons more on their birthdays.

One user found the menu so off-putting that they declared, “Yeah, a menu like this, and I’m walking out. It has a stink of ‘shitty business’ all over it.” Another user opined, “It just means you don’t tip because it’s already forced on. But yeah, this place is crazy.” A further comment chimed in, suggesting, “This whole thing reads like they’re doing you a favor by letting you eat there.” Meanwhile, one Redditor mused, “The food must be amazing for people to put up with the attitude on the menu.”

One Redditor in particular emphasized the menu’s numerous flaws, declaring, “This restaurant is giving me Karen vibes. Passive-aggressive menu, lack of consistent formatting or capitalization, complicated pricing, etc.” Another user humorously added, “They’re saying ‘I hate my customers’ without actually saying ‘I hate my customers.'”
