The family of a 14-year-old girl who discovered an iPhone taped to the back of a toilet seat on a recent flight from Charlotte, North Carolina, to Boston believes it was placed there by a member of the crew to record her. A male member of the crew ordered the child to use the first-class bathroom on American Airlines flight 1441 on September 2. According to her relatives, the crew member entered the bathroom immediately before the 14-year-old, told her the seat was broken but not to worry, and then re-entered the bathroom after she left.

After using the restroom, the girl noticed a partially covered iPhone mounted to the back of the toilet seat, reportedly to record her. Before exiting the bathroom, she took a picture of it with her phone. “These events have left our daughter — and our entire family — shocked and profoundly disturbed,” the family said in a statement. According to Paul Llewellyn, the family’s lawyer, they have not yet filed a complaint.
After the jet landed, law enforcement agents met it at the gate. A flight attendant was removed from the plane by Massachusetts State Police. Because the incident occurred in the air, where the FBI had jurisdiction, state police deferred to the FBI as the primary investigating agency. American Airlines said in a statement after the incident that officials at the airline “take this matter very seriously and are fully cooperating with law enforcement in their investigation, as safety and security are our highest priorities.”
