Acting head of Social Security Administration resigns after dispute with Elon Musk’s DOGE: Report

In a significant shake-up within the Social Security Administration (SSA), Acting Commissioner Michelle King has resigned following a contentious dispute with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by billionaire Elon Musk. The resignation, which occurred over the weekend, has raised concerns regarding the administration’s access to sensitive government records.

Departure amid tensions

Michelle King, a seasoned federal employee with nearly three decades of experience at the SSA, stepped down on Saturday after reportedly refusing to grant DOGE access to confidential Social Security data. She has been succeeded by Leland Dudek, a senior official from the SSA’s anti-fraud office who has expressed support for DOGE’s mission to eliminate waste and fraud in federal operations.

According to reports, Dudek will serve as acting commissioner until President Trump’s nominee, Frank Bisignano, is confirmed by the Senate. The White House has emphasized its commitment to appointing qualified individuals dedicated to serving the American public rather than adhering to bureaucratic norms.

The controversy surrounding data access

The specific nature of the sensitive information that DOGE sought remains unclear. However, it is known that the SSA manages extensive personal data for over 70 million Americans, including Social Security numbers, earnings histories, and medical records for disability benefit applicants. Concerns have been raised about the potential implications of granting DOGE access to such sensitive information.

Nancy Altman, president of the advocacy group Social Security Works, indicated that King had resisted DOGE’s attempts to access the agency’s Enterprise Data Warehouse—a centralized repository of personal information related to Social Security benefits. “She was standing in the way, and they moved her out of the way,” Altman stated, suggesting that Dudek’s appointment was intended to facilitate access to this data.

Musk’s claims and broader implications

Musk’s involvement with DOGE has come under scrutiny as he investigates alleged fraud within the Social Security system. Recently, he claimed on social media that he discovered “the greatest fraud in history,” citing over 20 million individuals listed in the database as over 100 years old. However, these figures have been previously acknowledged by SSA auditors as largely consisting of deceased individuals whose deaths were not reported.

The push for data access by Musk’s team aligns with broader efforts to root out inefficiencies across various federal agencies. This initiative has faced backlash from former officials who warn that such actions could jeopardize the integrity of critical government programs.

King’s resignation highlights ongoing tensions between career civil servants and the Trump administration regarding data access and oversight within federal agencies. As Dudek steps into his new role amid these controversies, questions remain about the future direction of the SSA and its ability to protect sensitive information while addressing concerns about waste and fraud in government spending. The situation continues to evolve as lawmakers prepare for Bisignano’s confirmation process in the coming weeks.
