14-year-old Arizona girl outsmarts alleged child predator after being approached for phone number

Incident highlights quick thinking in face of danger

An Arizona teenager’s quick thinking thwarted an alleged child predator’s attempt to lure her when she handed over her mother’s cell phone number instead of her own, according to Arizona police. The Glendale Police Department praised the 14-year-old girl for her decisive action, calling her response a “prime example of a young lady who thought quickly on her feet and did the right thing” in a Facebook post.

Approach by alleged predator

Authorities reported that 37-year-old Isaiah Navarro approached the teen while she was walking home from school. Surveillance footage captured the adult engaging with the girl, who wisely chose not to engage in conversation. When Navarro asked for her number, she provided her mother’s instead. “Navarro made contact later that day, thinking he was speaking to the 14-year-old victim,” the Arizona police explained. “Instead, he was communicating with her mother, who immediately contacted us. Unbeknownst to Navarro, our detectives got involved and continued the conversation.”

Graphic messages lead to arrest

As the conversation progressed, the texts Navarro sent to the mother, who was posing as her daughter, became increasingly graphic. The Glendale Police stated, “The conversation became more and more graphic with Navarro describing and asking for specific sex acts, without any regard for the age of the victim.”

Screenshots from the exchange revealed troubling messages. In one instance, Navarro wrote, “I want to make you [redacted],” followed by  “Send me pictures.” He also urged the teen to keep their conversation private. When the Arizona police arranged a meeting, Navarro agreed to the location. However, he was met with officers instead of the 14-year-old girl and was arrested. Navarro is now facing charges of luring a minor for sexual exploitation and is being held on a $250,000 bond.

Praise for the teen’s bravery

Social media users have lauded the teenager for her swift actions. Comments included expressions of gratitude for her safety, with one user stating, “Super smart kid! I’m glad nothing happened to her.” Another added, “Very brave young lady.
