January 2022

A significant earthquake measuring 6.2 on June 22 shook southeast Afghanistan. A minimum of 119 million people felt the four-kilometer-deep earthquake, which also impacted sections of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, from more than 500 kilometers distant. Since 1998, it was the deadliest earthquake to hit Afghanistan. In eastern Afghanistan and western Pakistan, there were at least 1,163 fatalities and nearly 6,000 injuries.

The former Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe was killed on July 8 while taking part in a public speech. He was transferred to the hospital where he was later declared dead, Nara Medical University Hospital. September 27 saw the day of his funeral. Tetsuya Yamagami, 41, the suspect, said to the police that he had been enraged by Abe’s association with the Unification Church (UC) because the group had rendered his mother bankrupt in 2002.
August 2022
When US House Speaker Paul Ryan visited Taiwan on August 2, tensions between the US and China reached an all-time high. China, which regards Taiwan as part of its territory, was not pleased with the visit. In response to the visit, China carried out its largest-ever military exercise in the vicinity of Taiwan. Pelosi declared upon her arrival in Taiwan that the US was “unwaveringly committed to supporting Taiwan’s thriving democracy” through her tour.
September 2022
A remarkable 70-year reign of Queen Elizabeth II came to an end on September 8 at Balmoral Castle. Charles, her son, became the next monarch right away. On September 19, her state funeral took place in Westminster Abbey in London. She was laid to rest in the King George VI Memorial Chapel with her husband, parents, and sister after having her coffin procession transported to Windsor Castle. October 2022
There were a couple of catastrophes this month. 131 people were murdered and more than 500 were injured on October 1 in a catastrophic crowd crush at the Kanjuruhan Stadium in Malang Regency, East Java, Indonesia. On October 29, 158 people perished in a different tragic crowd crash that happened during Halloween celebrations in Seoul, South Korea. Al-Shabaab carried out a double vehicle bombing in Mogadishu, Somalia, that same day that left at least 100 people dead. In Morbi, Gujarat, India, a 19th-century suspension bridge collapsed on the last day of the month, killing at least 141 people.
November 2022
On November 15 at 1:30 IST, the global population passed the eight billion mark. The day had been dubbed “Day of Eight Billion” by the UN. The landmark, according to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, is a chance to “celebrate our diversity, recognize our common humanity, and marvel at advancements in health” while considering “our shared responsibility to care for our planet and … one another”.
December 2022
Iran protests, which started after Mahsa Amini, 22, died after being detained by the moral police on September 16, had a somber scene on December 8 when Iran’s Revolutionary Court handed out its first execution during the demonstrations. Mohsen Shekari was accused of obstructing a street and hacking at a member of the security forces with a machete before being found guilty of “waging war against God.” Less than a week later, on December 12, Majidreza Rahnavard was publicly hung as the second execution.
