Thailand: Baby hippo Moo Deng becomes viral sensation, faces challenges from overenthusiastic fans

A Rising Star in the Animal Kingdom

Thailand’s Khao Kheow Open Zoo is witnessing an unprecedented surge in visitors, all eager to catch a glimpse of Moo Deng, a two-month-old female pygmy hippo whose name translates to “bouncy pig.” Since her birth in July, Moo Deng has captivated the hearts of many, leading to a doubling of visitor numbers at the zoo near Pattaya.

Director’s plea for proper behavior

However, the zoo’s director, Narongwit Chodchoi, has issued a stern reminder for visitors to treat Moo Deng with respect. “These behaviors are not only cruel but also dangerous,” he stated in an online message. “We must protect these animals and ensure that they have a safe and comfortable environment.”

The viral phenomenon

The adorable baby hippo has become the subject of numerous social media posts, with videos showing some visitors throwing shellfish and splashing water on her to wake her up. In response, the zoo has installed CCTV cameras around her enclosure and warned of potential legal action against those who mistreat her.

Endangered species under spotlight

Pygmy hippos, also known as dwarf hippos, are native to West Africa and are classified as “endangered” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Experts estimate that fewer than 3,000 remain in the wild, making Moo Deng’s presence even more significant.

A social media darling

Moo Deng’s miniature frame and charming proportions have inspired a fervent online following. One user on X remarked, “I’m obsessed with Moo Deng – I’ve been thinking about this queen all day long,” while another added, “I don’t know anything else going on in the world right now except for Moo Deng.”

Khao Kheow Open Zoo has adeptly leveraged Moo Deng’s popularity, dedicating 128 of its last 150 social media posts to her. The zoo has also launched a range of merchandise, including hippo-themed clothing, available both at the zoo and online.

Commercial endorsements

Beyond the zoo, other brands have joined the Moo Deng craze. Beauty retailer Sephora introduced a line of Moo Deng-inspired blushes, offering customers the chance to “wear your blush like a baby hippo.” One “Soft Pop Powder Blush” is priced at THB 1,590 ($47.70; £36.30).

International fame

Moo Deng’s charm has transcended borders, making headlines on international media. This week, she made her debut on Japanese television, courtesy of the All-Nippon News Network. The Royal Thai Embassy has also acknowledged her popularity, posting on X, “She’s very energetic and her cute appearance is soothing.”

Moo Deng’s journey from a newborn pygmy hippo to an internet sensation highlights both the power and the pitfalls of viral fame. As the world falls in love with her, it’s crucial for visitors to remember their responsibility in ensuring her safety and well-being.
