Large blast near Turkish Aerospace Industries leaves many dead and injured
A massive explosion rocked the area outside Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) near Ankara on Wednesday, leaving multiple people dead and injured in what Turkish authorities have described as a “terrorist attack.”
Turkey’s Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya confirmed the attack, stating, “A terrorist attack was carried out against the Turkish Aerospace Industries… Unfortunately, we have martyrs and injured people.”
The term “martyrs” is often used in Turkey to refer to soldiers or police officers who have died in service. Yerlikaya shared the update on X, formerly Twitter, expressing condolences for those who lost their lives and wished for the speedy recovery of the injured. “A terrorist attack was carried out against the Turkish Aerospace Industries… Unfortunately, we have martyrs and injured people,” Yerlikaya wrote.
Location of attack and ongoing situation
The explosion occurred in Kahramankazan, a small town approximately 40 kilometers (25 miles) north of Ankara. Initial footage broadcast by local media showed towering clouds of smoke and a significant fire raging at the site, highlighting the severity of the incident. Local outlets such as Haberturk TV reported a “hostage situation” unfolding at the scene, though further details were not immediately available. Additionally, the private broadcaster NTV reported gunfire in the vicinity following the blast, which occurred around 4:00 p.m. local time (1300 GMT).
No immediate claim of responsibility
As of now, no group or individual has claimed responsibility for the attack, leaving questions about the perpetrators and their motives. The blast comes at a time when Turkey’s defense sector is in the global spotlight.
The timing coincides with a major defense trade fair
The attack occurred as a significant defense and aerospace trade fair is underway in Istanbul, drawing international attention. The fair, which was visited by Ukraine’s top diplomat earlier in the week, showcases Turkey’s advanced defense technologies, including the renowned Bayraktar drones. Turkey’s defense industry has become a crucial component of its economy, contributing nearly 80% of its export revenues. The sector is expected to generate over $10.2 billion in revenue in 2023. Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident, and more information is expected as the situation develops.
