Disturbing Incident Recorded
In a harrowing case from Humboldt, Tennessee, a 12-year-old girl has been charged with the murder of her 8-year-old cousin, Demeria Hollingsworth. The incident, which took place on July 15, unfolded after an argument over an iPhone. The killing was recorded by a security camera inside the bedroom the girls shared.
Details of the crime
According to Gibson County District Attorney Frederick Agee, the video shows the older girl using bedding to suffocate Hollingsworth, who was asleep in the top bunk. Following the attack, the juvenile is reported to have cleaned the scene and repositioned the body.
Background and charges
Rayana Smith, the victim’s mother, revealed to WREG-TV that the girls had been arguing about the phone after arriving from out of town to stay with their grandmother. The 12-year-old has been charged with first-degree murder and tampering with evidence. Authorities obtained the incriminating video on Wednesday.
Agee described the case as one of the most disturbing violent acts his office has ever prosecuted. He plans to petition for the girl to be tried as an adult, which would lead to a potentially lengthier sentence. Smith expressed her wish for the maximum penalty, stating, “Last time I seen my baby, she was smiling, giving me kisses… She never coming back home.”
Community response and fundraising efforts
A GoFundMe campaign set up by Smith to cover funeral expenses has raised over $14,000 as of Monday morning. Smith’s emotional plea underscores the tragic impact of the incident, highlighting the profound loss and unexpected financial burden faced by her family.
