Investigation Underway as Federal Agencies Respond to Potential Threat
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the United States Postal Department have launched a thorough investigation into a series of suspicious packages mailed to election officials in 17 states. The alarming deliveries, some containing “an unknown substance,” have prompted swift action from federal authorities, although no injuries have been reported thus far.
Nationwide concern as packages sent to officials from New York to Alaska
Election officials, including secretaries of state, from New York to Alaska, have been targeted amidst a climate of rising threats and political tensions as the November presidential election approaches. The FBI and Postal Department are actively working to identify the number of letters sent, the individuals responsible, and their motives.
Authorities work to ensure safety
“Some of the letters contained an unknown substance, and we are working closely with our law enforcement partners to respond to each incident and safely collect the letters,” the agencies stated in a press release to CBS News. The Associated Press confirmed that packages were sent to officials in states such as Alaska, Georgia, Connecticut, and more.
“US Traitor Elimination Army” claims responsibility
In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold revealed that the sender identified themselves as the “US Traitor Elimination Army.” Despite the alarming name, officials in at least four states have confirmed that the substances posed no threat. In Oklahoma, the material was identified as flour.
Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, a Democrat, shared with CBS that her office receives daily threats through various channels, highlighting an “escalating” situation. This incident is reminiscent of last November’s scare when election offices in multiple states received envelopes containing fentanyl or other substances.
Separate investigation in Florida
In a related development, federal investigators are also questioning a gunman apprehended near a Florida golf course where former President Trump was present. The suspect had been lurking in the bushes, adding another layer of concern as the nation braces for the upcoming election.
The investigation continues as authorities strive to ensure the safety and security of election officials nationwide.
