Flight 225, which departed from Denver International Airport at 6:30 PM local time on Monday, June 3, was headed to Arizona but had to turn back after 41 minutes in the air.
Safe return to Denver
Following the tire blowout, the pilots declared an emergency and safely returned to Denver International Airport. The plane landed without further incident, and no injuries were reported among the passengers or crew.
In a statement released on Friday, June 7, Southwest Airlines confirmed the safe return of Flight 225. “Southwest Flight 225 returned safely to Denver on Monday, June 3, after a tire failed during takeoff. Following standard safety procedures, the pilots declared an emergency prior to landing. The flight landed without incident and taxied off the runway. A separate aircraft operated the scheduled flight to Phoenix,” the statement read.
Passengers describe the Ordeal
Passengers aboard Flight 225 recounted the terrifying experience. Julianna Donadio, a resident of Boulder, described hearing a loud and frightening noise as the tire burst during takeoff. “We knew we blew a tire, but we didn’t know what the landing gear situation was,” Donadio told KDVR.
Flight attendants informed passengers about the emergency landing, which led to panic on board. “When the flight attendants said we were going to have an emergency landing, we started to panic a little bit. People were definitely crying and screaming and trying to console one another. When we landed, everyone was cheering and clapping,” Donadio added.

Southwest Airlines thanked its flight crew for their professionalism during the emergency and expressed gratitude to the passengers for their patience. The airline emphasized that safety procedures were followed meticulously, ensuring the safe return of everyone on board.
