Queen Elizabeth II makes rare public appearance amongst health concerns

Queen Elizabeth II made a special public appearance at the annual Royal Windsor Horse Show on May 13 in her regular Range Rover. She came out in public after approximately two months away from the center of attention and several canceled events. The queen seemed happy during the event. She was wearing a white blouse, a blue cardigan, and tinted glasses.

According to British media sources, the longtime horse enthusiast spent nearly an hour at the show’s ceremonial ring near her Windsor Castle property in the west of London. The queen did not open parliament on Tuesday. This marked the first time she has missed the event since 1963. Officials explained her absence because of “episodic mobility problems” that have plagued her since last year.

Declining public appearances

This wasn’t the first time she did not go to an event. In April, she had to miss an Easter Sunday service. Meanwhile, in November, she had to cancel a Remembrance Sunday ceremony. However, Queen Elizabeth II recently attended a memorial service for her late husband, Prince Philip, at Westminster Abbey in London. She was using a walking stick at the time and needed assistance getting to her seat. Her declining public appearances, along with that of COVID-19 earlier this year, have raised questions about her health in her 70th year on the throne.

However, as the country prepares for her Platinum Jubilee next month, her impending calendar is as jam-packed as ever. The annual Trooping the Colour, is one of two occasions when Queen Elizabeth II commemorates her birthday. It is possibly the most anticipated event for royal watchers.
