Maria Belen Perez Maurice, an Argentine fencer, accepted a marriage proposal at Olympics from partner and coach Lucas Saucedo. The proposal at Olympics was in front of television cameras on Monday, the second time he had done so.
After a disappointing first-round exit in her third Olympics, the athlete was answering reporters’ questions. Then her coach, Lucas Saucedo, appeared behind her holding a piece of paper. It read, “Do you want to marry me?” He knelt on one knee.
“Tell me, yes, a lot of people are looking at us,” he said.
Just like the proposal at the Olympics, Saucedo attempted a similar method in the 2010 World Championships in Paris. But he failed miserably. “Is this a joke or what?” she responded at the time.
She finally said yes after eleven years.
“I was speechless. I said to myself ‘Oh my God’,” said Perez Maurice, who has been in a relationship with Saucedo for 17 years. “We’re going to celebrate it in Argentina around a big Asado (a traditional barbecue).”
It was a fantastic way to cap off a day. Since it began with a 15-12 loss in the women’s saber event to Hungarian Anna Marton.
After his team’s 3-2 triumph over Saudi Arabia on Sunday, German football striker Max Kruse also successfully asked his fiancée to marry him on live television.
