Pope Francis tests indicate 'early kidney failure' but he remains alert: Vatican

Rome: Pope Francis, 88, remains in critical condition, with blood tests revealing early signs of kidney failure, the Vatican announced on Sunday. However, despite his declining health, the pontiff remains alert and responsive.

The Pope, who has been battling respiratory issues, including pneumonia and a complex lung infection, was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on February 14 after a week-long struggle with bronchitis worsened.

Vatican provides health update

In a late Sunday update, the Vatican reported that Francis had not experienced any further respiratory crises since Saturday night but was still receiving high-flow oxygen therapy.

While blood tests indicated “initial, mild kidney failure,” doctors have stated that the condition remains under control.

“The complexity of the clinical picture and the necessary wait for drug therapies to take effect dictate that the prognosis remains guarded,” the Pope’s doctor noted.

Concerns over sepsis and blood conditions

Despite stabilization efforts, medical experts have warned of the risk of sepsis, a life-threatening blood infection that can result from pneumonia. However, the Vatican has not confirmed any signs of sepsis at this stage.

Additionally, Francis experienced a drop in platelet count on Saturday, which remained low but stable on Sunday. Low platelet levels can stem from medications, treatments, or infections.

During a blood transfusion on Saturday, the Pope also developed anemia, prompting doctors to administer hematin, a treatment designed to increase hemoglobin levels and improve oxygen circulation. Reports indicate that the treatment was beneficial.

With his chronic lung disease and advancing age, Pope Francis’ health remains fragile, and doctors describe his condition as touch-and-go.

Amid growing concerns, Francis has taken several key decisions, signaling that he is aware of his age and vulnerability.

Global prayers for Pope’s recovery

As the pope’s health remains uncertain, prayers continue to pour in from around the world. Catholics, churches, and religious communities globally are hoping for his recovery.
