Paralympics 2024: World’s second-tallest man to get bigger bed after sleeping on floor

Organizers Respond to Athlete’s Needs Amid Rising Concerns

In an unexpected turn of events at the Paralympics, organizers have pledged to provide a custom-made bed for Morteza Mehrzadselakjani, the world’s second-tallest man and a key player on Iran’s sitting volleyball team. Mehrzadselakjani, who stands just over eight feet tall, has been forced to sleep on the floor due to the lack of a sufficiently large bed.

Morteza Mehrzadselakjani is not just any athlete; he is a two-time Paralympic champion who has set his sights on more success at the Paris games. His remarkable height has made him a standout figure, both literally and figuratively, in the world of Paralympic sports. Despite his towering stature, Mehrzadselakjani had to sleep on the floor, as no standard bed could accommodate him.

Past challenges and future hopes

In the delayed Tokyo 2020 games, a special bed was arranged for Mehrzadselakjani. However, this year’s Paralympics saw no such provision, much to the dismay of his coach. “He doesn’t have a special bed, but he has got the most important aim in his mind. It doesn’t matter to him whether he will lay on the floor or he’s not going to have enough to eat. In any way, he has the mind to become a champion,” his coach told Olympics.com.

Official response

Upon learning about the issue through media reports, a Paralympics spokesperson confirmed to Newsround that they had initially informed Iran’s National Paralympic Committee (NPC) about the availability of two-bed extensions. Unfortunately, these extensions proved inadequate for Mehrzadselakjani’s needs. “Since learning about the situation in the media, we are making available additional extensions. The situation will be resolved today,” the spokesperson assured.

Despite the bed situation, Mehrzadselakjani and his team remain focused on their ultimate goal. Iran’s sitting volleyball team boasts an impressive record, having won seven out of the nine tournaments they have competed in. As they aim for their eighth victory in Paris, the team’s resolve remains unshaken.

This incident underscores the unique challenges faced by athletes with exceptional physical characteristics and highlights the importance of adaptability and responsiveness in organizing global sporting events. As Mehrzadselakjani prepares for another shot at glory, his story serves as an inspiration to many, showcasing the indomitable spirit of Paralympic athletes.
