Osama Bin Laden's son ordered to leave France over social media posts

In a decisive move, French authorities have instructed Omar bin Laden, son of the late Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, to exit the country due to inflammatory social media content. This development was announced by France’s Interior Minister, Bruno Retailleau, on Tuesday.

Omar bin Laden, 43, was born in Saudi Arabia and spent his early years in Sudan and Afghanistan. He distanced himself from his father at 19 and settled in Normandy, northern France, in 2016, where he pursued a career in painting.

Government’s stance

Retailleau, addressing the situation on X (formerly Twitter), revealed that Omar had been residing in the Orne department of Normandy as the spouse of a British national. The minister highlighted that in 2023, Omar posted comments on social media that were perceived as advocating terrorism.

Legal actions and consequences

In response, the prefect of Orne issued a directive for Omar to leave French soil. “The courts have confirmed the legality of this decision taken in the interests of national security,” Retailleau affirmed. Additionally, a ban has been imposed, preventing Omar bin Laden from re-entering France under any circumstances.

Personal life and previous media attention

Omar bin Laden’s marriage to Jane Felix-Browne, a British woman significantly his senior, drew substantial media interest when confirmed in 2007. After their marriage, she adopted the name Zaina Mohammed. Omar’s attempt to reside in the UK was previously denied by British authorities.

Osama bin Laden, the wealthy Saudi construction magnate’s son, reportedly fathered around two dozen children. The Al-Qaeda founder was killed by US special forces in Pakistan in 2011.

Political implications

Retailleau’s appointment as Interior Minister highlights a rightward shift in France’s government under new Prime Minister Michel Barnier. Retailleau has pledged to address immigration and crime, asserting that “the rule of law is neither intangible nor sacred.”
