Meta employee buys a 12-year lease on a cruise ship to see the world while working remotely

A 28-year-old Meta employee has rented an apartment on a luxurious cruise liner in order to travel around the world while working remotely.

Austin Wells, a Reality Labs employee, signed a 12-year lease for a property on the MV Narrative, a gigantic cruise ship with over 500 private rooms and suites.

Wells told CNBC earlier this month via video conference that he was looking forward to exploring new places while maintaining a routine. “What most thrills me is that I don’t have to disrupt my everyday routine in order to go around the world,” he remarked.

“I’m going from this model where you want to go somewhere, you pack a bag, you get on a flight, you rent a room – to now my condo, my gym, my doctors and dentists, all of my grocery stores travel the world with me,” Wells added.

The Meta employee spent $300,000 (about Rs 2.4 crore) on a 12-year lease for an entry-level flat on MV Narrative.

The cruise ship features 11 different types of homes, with the most luxurious, termed ‘Global,’ being 1,970 square feet and including four bedrooms, a dining space, two baths, and a balcony.

Wells’ more basic ‘Discover’ apartment will provide him with a 237-square-foot space complete with a folding bed, pantry, and shower room. He intends to stay for at least three years as the ship travels around the world. His lease will also grant him access to the ship’s co-working space, as well as a gym, spa, medical facilities, and 24-hour room service.

Storylines are building the cruise, which will sail in 2025.
