King Charles III has officially become richer than his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, according to the Sunday Times Rich List 2024. The 74-year-old monarch’s wealth has soared to $770 million, placing him as the 258th wealthiest individual in the United Kingdom. In contrast, Queen Elizabeth’s net worth was valued at $468 million before her death in September 2022.
Key assets and wealth accumulation
King Charles’ significant wealth increase—$12 million since last year—stems primarily from his valuable estates, Sandringham House and Balmoral Castle. A former aide disclosed that Charles managed to rebuild and grow his wealth after the substantial $22.5 million divorce settlement with his late ex-wife, Princess Diana, in 1996. He accomplished this by prudently saving profits from the Duchy of Cornwall, a vast $1.4 billion estate encompassing 13,000 acres of land and 260 farms and investments.
“He became prudent at tucking away some money from the Duchy after that wipeout [of capital],” the former aide told the Times. “We’re not talking vast sums here – several tens of millions, no more. There have been suggestions that Queen Camilla brought a good deal of money into their relationship, but that’s not correct,” the aide added.
The Duchy of Cornwall and increased profits
From 2011 to 2022, King Charles increased the duchy’s annual profits by 42.6%, raising them to over $31 million. Over that decade, he reportedly received over $268 million from the duchy. Established by King Edward III in 1337, the Duchy of Cornwall has traditionally been passed down to each Duke of Cornwall, a role now held by Prince William following Queen Elizabeth’s death.
Inheritance and annual sovereign grant
In addition to the Duchy, King Charles inherited an investment portfolio valued at approximately $151 million after his mother’s passing. The royal family also benefits from the Sovereign Grant, an annual payment from the UK government used to fund official royal duties.
Despite these known assets, the full extent of King Charles’ wealth remains difficult to estimate. The Times notes that the value of the royal family’s extensive collection of jewelry, art, and historical gifts received over the centuries is publicly unknown, adding to the complexity of calculating the monarch’s total net worth.
