Over half the respondents of a new YouGov poll revealed they do not believe the government should pay for the coronation of King Charles III. On the other hand, 32 percent stated the government should pay and 18 percent were unsure. The results come as the British economy struggles with the inflation rate reaching 10 percent. The recent weeks have been a testament to strikes by workers from various sectors over poor working conditions and low pay.
A coronation is a symbolic religious ceremony where a sovereign is crowned. It also involves placing the crown on the monarch’s head physically. The ceremony marks the transfer of powers and titles and formalizes the monarch’s role as the head of the Church of England.

The exact cost of the coronation is unknown. There will be two ceremonies, the first at Westminster Abbey and a concert at Windsor Castle the next day. However, his wife, Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle will be staying back in California.
While King Charles III took the role immediately following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, he will be crowned officially on May 6. Additionally, his wife Camilla is going to be crowned the Queen Consort. Elizabeth II was the longest-serving British monarch with seven decades, breaking Queen Victoria’s reign of 63 years. She breathed her last on 8 September 2022, at the age of 96. Her health caused major concerns towards the end of her life.
