The US imposed sanctions on Russian President Vladimir Putin’s daughters, Maria Vorontsova and Katerina Tikhonova, on Wednesday. It happened in response to the invasion of Ukraine.

The US is also targeting Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s wife and children, and members of Russia’s Security Council. It thereby includes former President and Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.

The US has tightened the sanctions against Russian financial institutions.

The penalties have cut off all of Putin’s close family members from the US financial system. Any assets they have in the US have been frozen.

Who are Katerina Tikhonova and Maria Vorontsova, the Russian President’s daughters?

Maria Vorontsova, 37, and Katerina Tikhonova, 35, are the daughters of Russian President Vladimir Putin and his former wife Lyudmila Putina.

Maria is likely to be born in the year 1985 in St. Petersburg. Katerina was born the following year.

The family was based in Germany at the time of Katerina’s birth. Putin worked for Russia’s secret service, the KGB, as a foreign intelligence officer.

Maria graduated from Saint Petersburg State University with a bachelor’s degree in biology and Moscow State University with a master’s degree in biology in 2011. She is also a pediatric endocrinologist, according to reports. Maria and Jorrit Faassen, a Dutch businessman, divorced last month.

Katerina, on the other hand, is likely to be the deputy director of the Institute for Mathematical Research on Complex Systems at Moscow State University. She was previously an acrobatic dancer. Her personal life is mostly shrouded in mystery.
