Jair Bolsonaro hospitalised following Brazil riots, shares picture from hospital bed

Former president of Brazil Jair Bolsonaro was admitted to a Florida hospital in the United States owing to gastrointestinal pain on the day his army of fans rampaged through Brasilia by assaulting important government buildings. He even posted a photo from the hospital. In the meantime, Brasilia police detained 1,500 of his fans for the violence. According to his wife Michelle Bolsonaro, the extreme right leader was admitted to AdventHealth Celebration acute care hospital south of Orlando, Florida.

“My dears, I come to inform you that my husband Jair Bolsonaro is under observation at the hospital, due to an abdominal discomfort resulting from the aftermath of the stabbing he took in 2018 from a former PSOL affiliate,” wrote Michelle in an Instagram story, referencing Brazil’s Socialism and Liberty Party. “We are praying for his health and for Brazil. God bless us,” she added. According to multiple reports, Bolsonaro’s condition is ‘not worrying’.

Bolsonaro has already had six surgeries as a result of the stabbing that occurred in 2018

Bolsonaro has already had six surgeries as a result of the stabbing that occurred during his 2018 presidential campaign. An attacker who was deemed mentally unable to stand trial committed the stabbing. Notably, Bolsonaro left for the US on December 31, which was two days before his mandate was really over. The customary passing of the presidential sash to newly elected President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva could not be performed due to the early departure.

Experts have noted that skipping the ceremony sends a message to Bolsonaro’s rowdy far-right fans that their supreme leader, who has repeatedly questioned the legitimacy of the October election results, does not accept the election outcome. Bolsonaro defended the freedom to “peaceful protests,” even though he denounced the attacks on Twitter and denied guilt.

At least 400 rioters have reportedly been detained after assaulting the Brazilian Supreme Court

Since then, the demonstrations by Bolsonaro’s followers have been compared to the attempted coup on Capitol Hill on January 6, 2021, by the supporters of then-US president Donald Trump. President Lula was compelled to declare an emergency due to the circumstances. The national guards were subsequently sent to the capital city to reestablish law and order. At least 400 rioters have reportedly been detained after assaulting the Brazilian Supreme Court, the Brazilian National Congress, and the Planalto Presidential Palace.
