Israeli forces successfully rescue 52-year-old hostage from Hamas tunnel in Gaza

Rescue Operation in Gaza: A Tactical Success

Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) and Shin Bet executed a high-stakes rescue mission on Tuesday, August 27, successfully freeing Qaid Farhan al-Qadi, a 52-year-old Israeli-Bedouin hostage held by Hamas since October 7. The operation, conducted in Rafah, involved elite units including Division 162, Brigade 401, Yahalom anti-tunnel special forces, and Shayetet 13 naval commandos.

Al-Qadi’s condition and background

Al-Qadi, who hails from Rahat, a predominantly Arab town in Israel, is reported to be in good health and is currently undergoing further medical evaluations at an undisclosed hospital. This marks the eighth live hostage rescue from Gaza, and notably, the first successful extraction from a Hamas tunnel, a significant departure from previous above-ground operations.

IDF’s commitment to hostage rescues

IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Herzi Halevi and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant lauded the operation’s success. Halevi stated, “We do everything we can to save hostages. The IDF and the Shin Bet showed courage, determination, and taking initiative in a complex operation.” Gallant echoed this sentiment, emphasizing on X, “We are committed to seizing every opportunity to bring the hostages back to their homes.”

This successful mission has reduced the number of hostages still held by Hamas from 250 to 108. While the details of the operation remain classified, the IDF has not disclosed whether there was any direct confrontation with Hamas forces during the mission.

Calls for diplomatic solutions

While the Hostages and Missing Families Forum, an Israeli campaign group, described al-Qadi’s rescue as “miraculous,” they also stressed the need for a broader strategy to ensure the safe return of all captives. “Military operations alone cannot free the remaining hostages who have suffered 326 days of abuse and terror,” the group stated, advocating for a negotiated ceasefire.

The group also urged the international community to maintain pressure on Hamas, stating, “A negotiated deal is the only way forward,” and called for global support in securing the release of all hostages.
