Death toll rises in riots after Mahsa Amini’s death

Following the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish Iranian woman while being held by the morality police, Iran is sending state security for quelling riots in the nation. Amini was held for allegedly breaking the dress code for a woman. She died three days after being in custody. Everyone in the country has been affected by the death of this lady,” stated Brigadier General Amirali Hajizadeh.

“I don’t have the latest figures, but I think we have had perhaps more than 300 martyrs and people killed,” among them some of “the best sons of the country,” added Hajizadeh. Brigadier Hajizadeh is with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and is the head of the Gaurds’ aerospace division. Moreover, about 40 foreigners in addition to thousands of Iranians are arrested as per the nation’s judicial authorities. An additional 2,000 people are charged and six of them are sentenced to death. As per Mizan Online news agency, Iran’s Judicaian authority on Tuesday announced the release of over 1,000 people including protesters.

More on the death toll

The most recent numbers are far higher than 300. A report by Uran Human Rights reveals a minimum of 416 lost their lives. They have been “killed in the suppression of protests in Iran”. Iran Human Rights is a Non-Government Organization (NGO) based in Oslo, Norway. The NGO states that the death toll includes people slaughtered in protests related to the death of Mahsa Amini. Additionally, it also includes specific turmoils in Sistan-Baluchistan. Sistan-Baluchistan is an Iranian province in the southeastern region, bordering Afghanistan and Pakistan. The death toll includes people who took to the street, police officers, IRGC militia, and soldiers who lost their lives during the ongoing riots and conflicts.
