The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), less than a week after India’s elimination from the T20 World Cup, has decided not to automatically renew the contracts of the current national selectors. Instead, a new panel will be charged with selecting separate captains for the different formats.
The Chetan Sharma-led selection committee’s term has not been extended by the BCCI, which also issued an application call for five open positions. “Appoint captaincy for the team in each format,” will be one of the key responsibilities of the new panel.
After India’s big ICC trophy drought continued with their T20 World Cup semi-final loss to England, the split captaincy was the inevitable course that Indian cricket will take.
Hardik and Bumrah are potential candidates for T20 captaincy
Currently, Hardik Pandya is the captain of the team for the ongoing limited-overs tour of New Zealand, however, Rohit Sharma currently serves as the team’s captain across all forms. Pandya, who led Gujarat Titans to the Indian Premier League championship in their first season, is the favorite to take over in the shortest format.
Jasprit Bumrah, another potential candidate for captaincy, is now sidelined due to injury, so it’s unclear what will happen when he rejoins the team. In contrast, Pandya is being developed with an eye toward the upcoming T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the United States in 2024. Rohit is already 35 years old and the Board may decide to keep him as captain for the upcoming 50-over World Cup on home soil. It’s unlikely that the roster for the upcoming edition will include the majority of the senior players that participated in the recent edition in Australia. Rahul Dravid’s position as head coach is not in danger, according to information.
The side that competed in Australia was plagued by a number of flaws, including mediocre openers, a lack of a strong finisher, the absence of an express pace bowler, and the absence of a wrist spinner. Suryakumar Yadav, the top-ranked batter in the T20 format, has saved India’s face with his explosive strokes. Many of the players who might be vying for positions in the white-ball lineup are currently in New Zealand and want to demonstrate their skills.
The 10-wicket debacle against England exposed the team’s flaws
In their opening match, India defeated Pakistan in a thrilling contest. However, after easily defeating the Netherlands, they were defeated by South Africa on a scorching Perth field. Prior to a convincing victory over Zimbabwe, when Yadav once again made a statement, even Bangladesh came close to winning the game that was hampered by rain.
However, the 10-wicket defeat against Jos Buttler and his eventual champions exposed the team’s flaws. KL Rahul fell short of expectations against strong opposition in terms of both runs scored and strike rate. Virat Kohli’s half-century and Pandya’s late surge brought India to 168, which turned out to be completely insufficient.
The new selection committee will be required to develop and create a strong bench for the senior men’s team in accordance with the BCCI’s employment requirements.
The current selection panel’s term expired last month, and the BCCI chose not to extend it. Sunil Joshi, Debashish Mohanty, and Harvinder Singh will also be replaced in addition to Chetan Sharma.
The BCCI issued a call for applications for five positions on Friday. The candidates must have played at least seven Test matches, thirty first-class matches, ten ODIs, and twenty first-class matches to meet the requirements.
Members of the existing selection committee may reapply for the positions if they so choose, according to a BCCI source.
In all likelihood, the board won’t choose the current panel but rather proceed with new candidates. The board hasn’t stated a rationale for not keeping the selection committee, although it’s possible that the unsatisfactory way that India was eliminated from the T20 World Cup had a role.
