Fire on Icon of the Seas

A fire broke out aboard the world’s largest cruise ship, Icon of the Seas, while it was docked in Costa Maya, Mexico. Royal Caribbean confirmed the “small fire” was “quickly extinguished” on Tuesday with no injuries and minimal impact.

Crew responds swiftly

The 1,200-foot-long, 250,800-gross-ton ship briefly lost power but backup systems were activated immediately. A Royal Caribbean spokesperson stated that crew members, trained for such emergencies, effectively controlled the blaze. Onboard announcements kept passengers informed, and social media posts indicated minor disruptions.

Launched earlier this year, the $2-billion Icon of the Seas features seven swimming pools, including a 17,000-square-foot water park. The fire did not affect the ship’s itinerary, and it is now headed to Cozumel.

Fire incidents on cruise ships

In March, a Carnival Cruise Lines ship also experienced a fire, which was captured on video by a passenger. A Royal Caribbean spokesperson told CNN that minor fires on cruise ships are rare but are typically handled swiftly and with minimal disruption to passengers.
