According to CNN, Italy’s Maenza village has become the first in Rome’s Latium province to start selling properties for one euro. This project aims to repopulate Italy’s villages and attract tourism to the country’s remote regions.
The first few residences will be up for purchase on August 28, 2021; more houses will be available to customers soon. Hundreds of abandoned or vacant huts in the region, on the other hand, will be up for sale shortly.
Mayor Claudio Sperduti said to CNN that “We’re taking it one step at a time. As original families get in touch and hand over to us their old houses, we place these on the market through specific public notices on our website to make it all very transparent”.
The town’s administration wants to “combat the abandonment of the ancient medieval village of the city center”. It is located about 70 km southeast of Rome.
The buyer must pay 5,000 euros as a deposit assurance to restore the home in Italy’s Maenza village within three years. Also, the deposit will be reimbursed after the renovation is completed.
The town will need a specific plan outlining how they intend to use their land. It could be a house, a restaurant, a business, or a bed and breakfast.
The one-euro housing initiative began last year as Italy faced a falling population in villages.8
