Massachusetts' Healey is 1st lesbian elected governor in the US

Democratic Attorney General Maura Healey created history in the United States by becoming the nation’s first openly lesbian governor after her victory in the state of Massachusetts.

Healey defeated Geoff Diehl a former state representative ruining as a Republican and receiving support from the ex-president Donald Trump.

After eight years of Republican administration under the well-liked Governor Charlie Baker, her victory means the Democrats are back in control of the governor’s office.

Healey along with her running mate, Salem Mayor Kim Driscoll, was among three all-female governor and lieutenant governor tickets.

“To those who voted for me and to those who didn’t, I want you to know that I’ll be a governor for everyone, and I’ll work with anyone who’s up for making a difference in this state,” Healey said, addressing her supporters.

“Tonight, I want to say something to every little girl and every young LGBTQ person out there. I hope tonight shows you that you can be whatever, whoever you want to be, and nothing and no one can ever get in your way except your own imagination, and that’s not going to happen,” she said.

Her campaign was heavily focused on improving schools, extending job training programs, and lowering the cost of child care.

Healey’s stance on Abortion

In response to the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, Healey has also stated that she will defend “access to safe and legal abortion in Massachusetts.”

Her campaign was heavily focused on improving schools, extending job training programs, and lowering the cost of child care. In response to the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, Healey has also stated that she will defend “access to safe and legal abortion in Massachusetts.”

In addition, the 51-year-old has vowed to sue Exxon Mobil over allegations that it misled investors and the general public about its knowledge of climate change and to defend homeowners and students against predatory lenders.

Although Healey is the first woman to be elected governor of Massachusetts, Republican Jane Swift served as acting governor after Paul Cellucci left to take a position as ambassador to Canada in 2001. Swift failed to win a governorship.

Since 1991, when Democrat Deval Patrick was governor, the Republican party had occupied the governor’s office in the Statehouse for all but eight of those years.
