Forensic testing to confirm identities
Hamas has transferred the bodies of four individuals it claims were Israeli hostages, including a mother and her two young sons. The family had become a symbol in Israel of the suffering faced by hostages held in Gaza. The remains will undergo forensic testing in Israel to verify their identities.
Details of the hostages
The bodies are believed to be those of 33-year-old Shiri Bibas and her two sons, Ariel, 4, and Kfir, who was just nine months old when they were taken captive. Also included is 84-year-old Oded Lifshitz. All four were taken hostage during Hamas’ attack on Kibbutz Nir Oz on October 7, 2023.
Hamas claims the hostages were killed in Israeli airstrikes during the Gaza conflict. However, Israel has not officially confirmed their deaths, cautioning that Hamas’ statements may be part of psychological warfare.
Shiri’s husband, Yarden Bibas, was also taken hostage during the same attack but was released earlier this month as part of a prisoner exchange agreement.
Impact of the Bibas family
The Bibas family, particularly the two young red-haired children, had become a powerful symbol of the hostage crisis. Their faces were widely displayed on posters and in commemorative events marking their birthdays. Their plight deeply moved many Israelis, who rallied in support of efforts to secure their safe return.
Oded Lifshitz was a retired journalist and peace activist who co-founded Kibbutz Nir Oz. He also volunteered with Road to Recovery, an organization that assists Palestinians with transportation to medical appointments in Israel and the West Bank. His wife, Yocheved, was also taken hostage but was freed after about two weeks.
Formal handover by Hamas
The remains were transferred to the Red Cross in a formal handover near a cemetery in Khan Younis, overseen by masked Hamas gunmen. During the event, four coffins draped in black were displayed on a stage, accompanied by posters in Hebrew and English. One poster depicted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a fanged vampire, while another warned that if Israel resumed its military operations in Gaza, other hostages would also be returned in coffins.
