What is the new executive order on gun control?
President Biden is expected to sign an executive order aiming to increase the number of background checks to buy guns. The executive order will also help in promoting more and better firearm storage. Additionally, it will ensure US law enforcement agencies get the most out of the bipartisan gun control law. Biden is planning to unveil the new efforts to curb gun violence in a speech from California’s Monetery Park.
Biden, praising Brandon Tsay’s heroism also invited him to the State of the Union address. Tsay is the 26-year-old who wrestled the pistol from the gunman in Monterey Park. “He saved lives. It’s time we do the same as well. Ban assault weapons once and for all,” stated Biden in his speech to Congress. The President’s rhetoric has increased around guns with him calling for the ban of “assault weapons” in his speeches.
More on the order
Biden is going to mandate that the cabinet work out a plan, better structuring the support for communities suffering from gun violence. The plan will also call on Merrick Garland, the Attorney General to shore up rules for licensed gun dealers. “Too many lives have been taken by gun violence. But he believes we need to do more. You’ll hear him call on Congress to take action and not to stop. That we need to continue,” stated Karine Jean-Pierre, the White House secretary.
“President Biden’s executive order today is a home run for public safety,” stated John Feinblatt. Feinblatt is the president of Everytown for Gun Safety. “This is the latest example of President Biden’s leadership on gun safety, and we’re also proud to stand with him as he takes robust action to help close the gun seller loophole. This will significantly expand background checks on gun sales, keep weapons out of the hands of dangerous people and save lives,” stated Feinblatt.
