According to police, at least ten guards and four inmates were slain in an armed attack on a prison in Juarez, a border town in northern Mexico. In addition, roughly 24 convicts escaped and 13 others were hurt as a result of the turmoil. At least two other people were slain in other parts of the city as a result of armed violence.
According to reports, the alleged breakout began when gunmen in armored trucks opened fire on a state prison in Ciudad Juarez; however, it is unclear who carried out the attack.
According to the El Paso Times, the attackers arrived at the Cereso No. 3 state jail at 7:00 a.m. (local time) and opened fire, according to the initial inquiry. The state police regained control late Sunday, according to the state prosecutor’s office, and an investigation into the deadly incident is continuing.
Later in the day, Juarez, which lies across the border from the United States Texas city of El Paso, witnessed another armed attack in which two drivers were killed. In a separate incident, “Minutes before what happened, it was reported in the Avenida Manuel Gomez Morin, an armed attack against elements of the Municipal Police, in which, after a chase, four men were captured and a Ford Expedition truck was seized”, said the Chihuahua Prosecutor’s Office.
It is yet unknown whether these three instances were connected. This comes months after a brawl between members of two competing cartels erupted in the same prison, causing authorities to dispatch hundreds of Mexican military to Juarez. At least 11 individuals, largely civilians, were killed in the rioting, and two inmates were also killed.
