Georgia high school shooting: FBI had 14-year-old shooter on radar for over a year

Tragic Incident in Winder, Georgia

On Wednesday, September 4th, a 14-year-old gunman unleashed a deadly shooting spree at a high school in Winder, Georgia, claiming the lives of four individuals, including two students and two teachers. The tragic event also left nine others wounded. Shockingly, it was later revealed that the shooter, a student at the school, had been on the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) radar for over a year due to threats of committing a school shooting.

Shooter to be tried as an adult

Despite his young age, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation announced that the gunman would face murder charges and be tried as an adult. This decision underscores the gravity of the heinous act committed.

The shooting occurred near the town of Winder, approximately 45 miles (72 kilometers) northeast of Atlanta, the state capital. The swift response from law enforcement, particularly the school resource officer, was critical in subduing the shooter. County Sheriff Jud Smith detailed the encounter, stating that the officer “engaged him.”

“The shooter quickly realized that if he did not give up that it would end with an OIS — an officer-involved shooting. He gave up, got on the ground, and the deputy took him into custody,” Sheriff Smith explained.

FBI under scrutiny

Questions have arisen regarding the FBI’s prior knowledge of the shooter. According to an AFP report, the FBI acknowledged late on Wednesday that they had been aware of the shooter for over a year. The county sheriff’s office had interviewed the then-13-year-old suspect and his father at that time. Although the child denied the threats, he was flagged to the school officials for monitoring.

Sheriff Smith added that it remains unclear whether the shooter had specific targets or if the shooting was random. The weapon used in the attack has yet to be identified.

Political reactions

The shooting has sparked strong reactions from political leaders across the spectrum. Republican US presidential candidate Donald Trump did not mince words, labeling the shooter as a “sick and deranged monster.”

In contrast, US President Joe Biden expressed his profound sorrow and highlighted the broader issue of gun violence in schools. “Students across the country are learning how to duck and cover instead of how to read and write. We cannot continue to accept this as normal,” President Biden stated.

Democratic Party presidential candidate Vice President Kamala Harris also weighed in during a campaign event in New Hampshire, emphasizing the need to address the “epidemic of gun violence.”

As the community of Winder grapples with the aftermath of this horrific event, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges posed by gun violence in American schools. The revelations about the FBI’s prior awareness of the shooter add another layer of complexity to an already tragic situation.
