Former housekeeper sues Jeff Bezos over long working hours, racial discrimination

According to Bloomberg, a former cleaner of Jeff Bezos is suing him on the basis that his staff subjected her to racial discrimination and made her work long hours. Mercedes Wedaa, who started working for the company in September 2019, complained that the working environment was toxic and that she was forced to work continuously without pauses for meals or rest.

She complained on Tuesday in state court in Seattle, claiming that she occasionally worked 10 to 14 hours a day while managing a group of five to six housekeepers. She further said that there was no dedicated break area and that employees frequently ate in the laundry room. They had to use a window in order to use the restroom because they were not permitted to use the one in the adjoining security room.

Bezos’s attorney has discredited all of these allegations, claiming they have no substance

According to reports, one of Bezos’s household managers allegedly displayed “aggressive and abusive” behavior against Wedaa. She said that the boss gave her and other Hispanic workers less respect than White groundskeepers and maintenance workers who worked for Bezos. After working there for almost three years, her services were terminated, according to the complaint.

According to labor and employment rules, employees must be paid for the work they do and have access to a safe, clean, and healthy workplace to do it in, according to Patrick McGuigan, a lawyer for Wedaa.

Meanwhile, Bezos’s attorney has discredited all of these allegations, claiming they have no substance. According to the complaint, Wedaa is requesting monetary damages as well as back salary and benefits.
