Amber McLaughlin is scheduled to become the first openly transgender woman executed in the United States. In 2006, she was sentenced to death for the murder of her girlfriend.
All eyes are now on Missouri Governor Mike Parson to see if he would grant clemency to Amber, who is due to die by lethal injection on Tuesday. As of Monday morning, approximately 4,900 people had signed an internet petition appealing for the execution to be halted.
According to the anti-execution Death Penalty Information Center, there has never been an execution of an openly transgender inmate in the United States. The last woman executed in Missouri was Bonnie Heady, who was hanged in 1953 for the murder of a six-year-old boy.
On December 12, her attorneys petitioned the governor for clemency, urging Parson to reduce McLaughlin’s sentence to life in prison and emphasizing that she was not sentenced to death in a jury trial.
The clemency petition focuses on the terrible experiences McLaughlin endured as a youngster
The clemency petition focuses on the terrible experiences McLaughlin endured as a youngster, as well as her mental health issues, which her attorney’s claim was never heard by the jury during her trial.
According to the mercy appeal, a foster parent smeared excrement in her face when she was a kid, and her adoptive father used a stun pistol on her.
It goes on to explain that she suffers from depression and has attempted suicide several times.
McLaughlin, 49, was in a relationship with their girlfriend BeverlyGuenther before transitioning.
McLaughlin began stalking her ex-partner after the relationship ended.
Guenther eventually had to get a restraining order, and police officers would periodically accompany her to her car after work.
According to court records, McLaughlin eventually killed Guenther in November 2003, after which she was convicted of first-degree murder.
“We think Amber has demonstrated incredible courage because I can tell you there’s a lot of hate when it comes to that issue,” Amber McLaughlin’s lawyer Larry Komp told Sky News.
