Finnish prime minister takes drugs test after party video causes stir

Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin said on Friday she had taken a drug test. The move comes in the wake of video footage published earlier this week that showed her partying with friends. She vowed she had never used illegal drugs. “I have today taken a drug test and the results will come within a week,” she told a news conference.

Video clips of Marin partying with well-known Finnish influencers and artists began circulating on social media this week. Moreover, they were soon published by several media outlets in Finland and abroad.

“Never in my life have I used drugs”: Sanna Marin

Marin added that her ability to perform her duties remained unimpaired during the night in question. Moreover, she would have left the party had she been required to work.

“In recent days, there have been quite grave public accusations that I was in a space where drugs were used, or that I myself used drugs,” Marin told a news conference.

“I consider these accusations to be very serious. And, though I consider the demand for a drug test unjust, for my own legal protection and to clear up any doubts, I have taken a drug test today. The results of which will come in about a week.”

Sanna is the world’s youngest serving government leader

Marin became the world’s youngest serving government leader in December 2019. She had faced calls to do a drug test from politicians in her government coalition as well as from the opposition after the videos emerged. She claimed that she had never taken drugs. Also, she had not seen anyone doing so at the party she attended.

While many have praised Marin for combining her demanding job with an active private life. Others have questioned her decision to allow herself to be filmed even when promised that the videos would not be made public.
