Bizarre Claim Sparks Social Media Frenzy
In 2017, a pastor from Mexico’s Iglesia del Final de los Tiempos, or Church of the End of Times, claimed to have met with “God” and received authorization to sell plots in “heaven” for $100 per square meter. Promising prime real estate near God’s palace, the pastor assured buyers that a spot in heaven was guaranteed regardless of plot size.
Promotional material and online buzz
Promotional materials, featuring a heavenly mansion bathed in golden rays and a cheerful family, highlighted various digital payment options including Visa, MasterCard, Google Pay, and Apple Pay. The bizarre offer quickly gained traction, with numerous TikTok and Instagram influencers creating videos about the church’s purported sales. Even established media outlets reported on the story, unaware that it was satire.
Satirical origins and public reactions
The Iglesia del Final de los Tiempos was created to mock exploitative pastors. Their Facebook page, categorized as “Just for fun,” shares bizarre and humorous content. Despite its satirical nature, the story fooled many into believing the church had collected millions of dollars since 2017.
Social media users reacted with a mix of humor and disbelief. One user commented, “noooooo they’re doing it againnnnn,” while another said, “History repeats itself. That’s why knowledge is key.” Another quipped, “I hope he uses it to buy himself some air conditioner coz he’s guna need it where he’s going,” with another adding, “Don’t forget to tell them about homeowners insurance for their home in heaven.”
This satirical story serves as a reminder of the need for critical thinking and skepticism in the face of sensational claims.
