Evan Gershkovich’s Return and Remark
Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich made a remarkable two-word comment after landing back on US soil, following his release from a Russian prison. Greeted by President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, Gershkovich’s emotional reunion included a warm welcome from his Wall Street Journal colleagues.
Historic prisoner swap
Gershkovich was among two dozen individuals released in the most significant US-Russia prisoner swap since the Soviet era. He spent over a year in Russian detention on espionage charges, which he and the US government deny.
Upon his return, Gershkovich expressed his relief, saying he felt “not bad” and greeted the Wall Street Journal’s world coverage chief with, “Hey boss!” He thanked his editor-in-chief, Emma Tucker, for her relentless efforts in advocating for his release.
Family’s joy and CIA’s role
His family shared their joy with the Wall Street Journal, stating, “We have waited 491 days for Evan’s release.” Meanwhile, the CIA played a crucial role in the swap, proposing the exchange of Russian assassin Vadim Krasikov, held in Germany, for Gershkovich and former US Marine Paul Whelan. The intricate negotiations spanned months and involved multiple countries, culminating in the release of 24 prisoners.
Gershkovich’s return marks a significant diplomatic achievement and a heartfelt moment for his family, colleagues, and supporters, highlighting the complexities and triumphs of international diplomacy.
