American nurse's European vacation ends in tragedy: Body found in Hungarian woods

Irish National Arrested in Connection with Budapest Murder

In a tragic turn of events that has shocked both local and international communities, a 31-year-old American nurse’s European vacation ended in death after a fateful night in Budapest’s nightlife district. Hungarian authorities have arrested a 37-year-old Irish national in connection with the murder.

Kenzie Michalski, a Portland, Oregon native, disappeared on November 5 after visiting several clubs in Budapest’s vibrant nightlife area. Security footage revealed that Michalski had spent the evening with a man who would later become the prime suspect in her murder.

“The Terézváros police caught sight of a man with whom the missing girl was seen in several nightclubs; was identified, and a VII. the 37-year-old MLT Irish citizen was arrested in front of an apartment in the district,” stated Budapest police.

Chilling details emerge

According to police investigators, the suspect allegedly went to extraordinary lengths to conceal the crime. After the murder, he reportedly:

The suspect drove approximately 90 miles southwest to Lake Balaton, where he disposed of Michalski’s body in a wooded area near Szigliget. Perhaps most disturbing were the suspect’s internet searches, which included queries about body disposal methods, police procedures for missing persons cases, whether pigs consume human remains, and local wild boar populations near Lake Balaton.

A dream vacation’s tragic end

The murder occurred just one day after Michalski had concluded a European vacation with her friend, Gretchen Tower. Tower, who had continued her journey to Italy, told WKBW that her last communication with Michalski was shortly after midnight Tuesday. The alarm was raised when Michalski failed to check out of her Airbnb or board her flight back to the United States, prompting Tower to contact the U.S. Embassy.

A father’s heartbreak

At a candlelight vigil held Saturday in Budapest, Bill Michalski, the victim’s father, shared his daughter’s deep connection to the city. “The history—she just loved it and she was just so relaxed here. This was her city,” he said, his voice heavy with emotion. “There was no reason for this to happen. I’m still trying to wrap my arms around what happened… I don’t know that I ever will.”

The tragic irony of the situation was not lost on those who knew Michalski. Budapest had been her “happy place,” a city she had visited before and had grown to love deeply. Now, it will forever be remembered as the location of her untimely death.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working closely with international law enforcement agencies. The suspect remains in custody as the case continues to develop.
