French authorities arrested 26-year-old Egyptian wrestler Mohamed Elsayed early Friday morning on allegations of groping a woman in a Paris bar. The arrest took place around 5 a.m. in the city’s 13th district after a female patron accused Elsayed of “placing a hand on her buttocks,” according to the Paris prosecutor’s office.
Olympic background
Elsayed, who secured a bronze medal in Greco-Roman wrestling at the Tokyo Olympics, had recently competed in the 67 kg category at the Paris Games. He was defeated by Azerbaijan’s Hasrat Jafarov on Wednesday, who later claimed the bronze medal in the same category.
Unclear legal status
Details regarding Elsayed’s current legal status remain unclear, with no immediate confirmation on whether he has been released following the arrest.
French newspaper Le Parisien reported that Elsayed was “roaring drunk” at the time of the incident, adding further scrutiny to the situation involving the Olympian.
