What is the dragon’s breath? Why is it dangerous?

The government of Indonesia is warning people against consuming dragon’s breath, the liquid nitrogen-containing street snack. Over 20 children were harmed after partaking in the video trend. They dip the candies in liquid nitrogen for creating a vapor effect when consumed. The snack is popular among children. Moreover, several are uploading short videos on TikTok, showing off by blowing fumes out of their ears, noses, and mouths.

The colorful candies caused burns on their skin, food poisoning, and severe stomach aches. Hence, the Ministry of Health is urging teachers, local health authorities, and parents to be vigilant. According to Maxi Rein Rondonuwu, 25 children experienced issues after taking “dragon’s breath”. Maxi is the director general of Indonesia’s health ministry.

Is liquid nitrogen harmful?

Using liquid nitrogen in food preparation is legal. The clear, odorless, and colorless ingredient is helpful in creating theatrical effects while serving food. Additionally, it is also used for freezing products in a medical setting. However, it can be dangerous when not used properly. “Liquid nitrogen is not only dangerous when consumed, but it can also cause severe breathing difficulties from nitrogen fumes that are inhaled over a long time. Schools must educate children in the community about the dangers of liquid nitrogen in food (to) prevent more cases of severe food poisoning,” stated Maxi.

Moreover, In 2018, the US US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) alerted the danger of consumption of food and drinks prepared using liquid nitrogen. “Injuries have occurred from handling or eating products prepared by adding liquid nitrogen immediately before consumption, even after the liquid nitrogen has fully evaporated due to the extremely low temperature of the food,” stated the FDA.
