Concerns over Biden's cognitive decline raised by staffers, lawmakers

Concerns Mount Over President’s Mental Acuity

In a revealing report by The Wall Street Journal on June 4, nearly 45 Republican and Democratic lawmakers and staffers disclosed concerns about President Joe Biden’s cognitive fitness. During recent interactions, these insiders noted a significant decline in the 81-year-old president’s cognitive abilities.

Soft speech and reliance on notes

The report highlights that Biden often speaks so softly in meetings that he is difficult to understand. His grasp of policy details and overall demeanor fluctuate daily, with a noticeable reliance on notes and frequent assistance from aides. One source described feeling “uncomfortable” during critical negotiations over Ukraine aid in January, where Biden took ten minutes to start the meeting and heavily relied on note cards.

Policy awareness issues

An alarming moment occurred when House Speaker Mike Johnson questioned Biden about the administration’s liquid natural gas export policy, which Johnson feared benefited Russia. Biden appeared unaware of the policy, incorrectly stating it was “only a study.” This left Johnson “dismayed,” according to witnesses.

Dependence on cards and general responses

Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy described Biden as “rambling” and mumbling during tense debt ceiling negotiations last May. McCarthy emphasized Biden’s dependence on notes, stating, “He couldn’t negotiate another way.” Reflecting on past interactions, McCarthy noted, “He’s not the same person.”

McCarthy also mentioned that Biden’s responses during negotiations were frustratingly “general,” with the president often expressing only vague optimism about resolving issues. “He was going back to all the old stuff that had been done for a long time,” McCarthy remarked.

The report underscores growing concerns about Biden’s ability to effectively lead and engage in detailed policy discussions, raising questions about his cognitive health as he continues his presidency.
