Chinese man dies of heart attack after undergoing 23 teeth extractions, 12 implants in one day

In a tragic turn of events, a Chinese man passed away from a heart attack just 13 days after undergoing an extensive dental procedure that saw the extraction of 23 teeth and the insertion of 12 implants in a single day.

The incident came to light when the man’s daughter shared the harrowing details in an online post on September 2. According to her account, her father underwent the dental procedure at Yongkang Deway Dental Hospital on August 14.

The procedure and the aftermath

The dental surgery utilized the “immediate restoration” method, as outlined in the signed consent form, which allowed for the extraction of 23 teeth and the placement of 12 implants in one session. The surgeon, who has five years of experience and specializes in root canal treatment, impacted wisdom tooth extraction, and complete dentures, performed the procedure.

Despite the completion of the dental treatment, the man experienced continuous pain. Tragically, on August 28, he succumbed to a sudden cardiac arrest.

“I never thought my dad would pass so quickly. He did not even get the chance to drive the new car we bought him,” lamented the daughter.

Public and official reactions

The incident has left many in shock, prompting reactions from various officials and netizens. The Yongkang Municipal Health Bureau stated, “Since there was a 13-day gap between the tooth extractions and his death, we are still investigating the cause.”

A staff member from the clinic told The New York Post, “We will not be responding to this matter now as it has been handed over to our lawyer. If there are any updates, we will issue a statement; however, the investigation is ongoing.”

Expert opinions and public outrage

Xiang Guolin, the director of the Dental Medicine Centre at the Hospital of Universal Love in Wuhan, weighed in on the procedure, telling Jimu News, “Extracting 23 teeth is quite a lot. It requires a clinic and dentist with sufficient qualifications and experience. It’s also essential to consider the patient’s physical capacity to handle such an extensive procedure.”

The news sparked outrage and disbelief among netizens. “Removing 23 teeth in one day? How could they even consider doing that? I once asked to have two wisdom teeth taken out at the same time and the dentist refused,” one person commented.

Another user, identifying as a dentist, wrote, “I never extract more than three teeth at one time unless they’re very loose. The doctor must have lost his mind. It sounds more like a human experiment than a dental procedure.”

Ongoing investigation

As the investigation continues, the case raises significant questions about medical protocols and patient safety in extensive dental procedures. The dental community and the public alike await further updates to understand the full implications of this tragic event.
