According to a recent prediction from a US-based agency, if China decides to stick with its intention to loosen the strict coronavirus controls, more than a million Covid deaths might occur by 2023.
China may have recorded 322,000 fatalities till now
By April 1, when the number of Covid cases reaches its height, China may have recorded 322,000 fatalities, according to the Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME). IHME Director Christopher Murray remarked on Friday when the IHME estimates were made public online, “Nobody believed they would stick to zero-COVID as long as they did.
After enormous public protests in December, Beijing decided to loosen its severe Covid restrictions. Since the restrictions were loosened, China has seen an increase in illnesses, raising concerns that the virus may infect the entire country’s 1.4 billion people during the Lunar New Year holiday next month. Additionally, it has not noted any Covid deaths since the limitations were lifted. On December 3, there were no further documented official deaths. 5,235 people have died as a result of the epidemic.
Chinese officials are attempting to offer booster doses for the vulnerable groups
Beijing chose to loosen the limits because, according to the IMHE, the discovery of highly transmissible Omicron strains rendered China’s zero-Covid policy unworkable. The group, which is located at the University of Washington in Seattle, based its forecasts on information from a recent Omicron outbreak in Hong Kong as well as provincial data. “Since the initial Wuhan outbreak, China has hardly reported any fatalities. Therefore, in order to estimate the infection mortality rate, we looked to Hong Kong” Murray remarked.
In addition, the IHME estimates were based on assumptions about how different provinces would react as infection rates rose and data on vaccination rates provided by the Chinese government. While the government remains skeptical about the use of vaccination using foreign vaccines, Chinese officials are attempting to offer booster doses for vulnerable groups. China’s National Health Commission announced on Friday that it was stepping up immunizations and stockpiling ventilators and critical medications.
