Canada announced on Friday that an aircraft was sent to Jamaica this week to solve a maintenance issue with the plane that flew Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on a visit to the Caribbean, allowing him to return home.
It is the second recent occurrence of such an airplane malfunction; Trudeau’s departure from India in September 2023 was delayed by a few days following a G20 conference.
“We can confirm two Royal Canadian Air Force CC-144 Challengers were in Jamaica supporting transport for the prime minister,” a spokesperson for Canada’s defense department said.
The maintenance issue was discovered during an inspection on Tuesday, before Trudeau’s departure date, according to the spokeswoman. A maintenance team and aircraft were deployed to the island the next day to restore the boat to service.
According to the spokeswoman, Trudeau was able to return on the original jet.
