According to the government, last year, Canada’s population increased by over a million for the first time in history. According to Statistics Canada, the population climbed by 2.7 percent, from 38.5 million to 39.5 million people, the largest yearly population growth rate since 1957. According to the BBC, if the government maintains this rate of development, the population will double in 26 years.

The population increase follows the Canadian government’s efforts to alleviate labor shortages. According to Statistics Canada, the spike in permanent and temporary immigrants creates extra issues such as housing, infrastructure, and transportation in various regions of the country.

Canada received 437,000 immigrants in 2022, while the number of temporary residents climbed by 607,782

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau revealed a proposal in 2022 to bring in 1.5 million immigrants annually by 2025. It was shown that the country was relying heavily on immigration to fill economic gaps. Canada, like many other Western countries, has an aging population and a low birth rate. The country accepted refugees from conflicts such as the Russia-Ukraine war, the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, and the humanitarian crises in Taliban-led Afghanistan.

According to the government, Canada received 437,000 immigrants in 2022, while the number of temporary residents climbed by 607,782, resulting in a “record-breaking year for the processing of immigration applications.” It went on to say that with this rising population, Canada might be first among the 38 member nations of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development in terms of population growth in 2022 and that it is presently the fastest-growing G7 country.
