According to reports, California is to pay rent accumulated during the coronavirus pandemic. This move goes a long way in keeping up with helping people break even. Interestingly, as per reports, a little more than 2 percent of California residents have applied for rent relief and obtained it.
Here’s how California will pay rent gathered
California has racked up close to $5.2 billion in federal aid packages to pay rent accumulated during the pandemic as per Jason Elliot, the senior counselor to Gavin Newson on housing and homelessness. However, the state has been slow in distributing these funds. It has received $490 million since May 31, 2021. However, out of it, only $32 million of the payments have been made. Moreover, it does not include the 12 cities which run independently of the rental assistance program.
The new directives
However, the state officials have not agreed on extending the state’s eviction moratorium. As of now, it will expire on June 30, 2021. Extending it will give California enough time to distribute funds to pay the unpaid rent. Unfortunately, it might not be possible to do it before the end of June. Reports mention that Newson lawmakers met privately to debate on how long the eviction moratorium should last.
