Californa’s Governor, Gavin Newson managed to fend off an attempt to recall from the Republicans. Read to know the important takeaways from the California recall election victory.
GOP reinforces baseless fraud claims
While the Republican’s groundless claims of election fraud will never disappear, they were quick to call out that the elections were ‘rigged’ as the ballots were being cast. However, it was a baseless and strange allegation since they performed well and gained four congressional seats. Unfortunately, former President Trump’s habit of making false election claims has seeped into the Republicans.
Moreover, the recall was a long-short in a state such as California where Democrats outnumber the Republicans. Additionally, the GOP has not won a single statewide election since 2006. “This is going to be the second election in a row where there are going to be aggressive, emotional charges of voter fraud. I cannot see a positive out of it,” said Mindy Romero. Romero is the director at the University of Southern California’s Center for Inclusive Democracy.
In addition to this, there is only darkness for the GOP in California. The recall was merely a way to dodge a match and send voters to their regular corners. Moreover, it is very similar to the 2003 recall where Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger won against Democrat’s Gov. Gray Davis. However, California is much more diverse and liberal than it was in 2003. California now registers over 3 million Democrats since then.
COVID-19 precautions are in the Democrat’s favor
The Republicans planned the California recall election to be a referendum on the Democrat’s rule in California along with the crime, high housing costs, homelessness, and other misfortunes. However, with the fast-spreading delta variant and the political situation, Governor Newsom turned the situation. And, even after winning, he emphasized the COVID-19 situation. “I want to focus on what we said yes to as a state: We said ‘yes’ to science, we said ‘yes’ to vaccines, we said yes to ending this pandemic,” said Newson.
Republicans running against Newson opposed the vaccine and mask mandates. And, Newson was quick to highlight the fact and aired an ad calling the California recall election “a matter of life and death.” However, it is Ironic that the recall obtained steam after Newson was caught at a lobbyist’s birthday party in November 2020—unmasked and violating social distancing mandates.
California recall elections show uncertain signs for the coming midterm elections
The California recall election is one of the first significant elections during President Biden’s presidency. The recall is a ‘political stress test’ for both parties on the eve of the 2022 midterm elections. The Democrats demonstrated a tough task by turning out the voters as they help the White House. However, it also showed how the Republicans were still at work, trying to win both the Senate and the House. The turnout in the Cali recall has high expectations.
The whole event was a referendum on Governor Newsom and how the citizen of California want their state to work, especially with the pandemic still around.
