California Firefighter Arrested for Allegedly Sparking Multiple Fires

In a shocking turn of events, a California firefighter faces accusations of violating his duties by igniting several fires in recent weeks.

Robert Hernandez, 38, an engineer with CAL FIRE, was arrested by law enforcement officers at the Howard Forest Fire Station on Friday. Hernandez is accused of setting five fires while off duty, a serious breach of trust for someone tasked with protecting the community from such dangers.

According to CAL FIRE, the fires collectively scorched an area of less than an acre. Despite the limited damage, the implications of a firefighter allegedly turning arsonist have sent ripples through the firefighting community.

A betrayal of trust

CAL FIRE Director and Fire Chief Joe Tyler expressed his dismay, stating, “I am appalled to learn one of our employees would violate the public’s trust and attempt to tarnish the tireless work of the 12,000 women and men of CAL FIRE.”

The investigation links Hernandez to several incidents: the Alexander Fire on August 15, the Windsor River Road Fire on September 8, the Geysers Fire on September 12, and the Geyser and Kinley fires on September 14.

Legal proceedings

Information regarding Hernandez’s legal representation was not immediately available. Authorities have confirmed that he is set to be booked into Sonoma County Jail on charges of arson to forest land.
